Institute of Contemporary Art

Since 2014 the Open Culture Foundation closely collaborates with the Institute of Contemporary Art in Moscow (ICA). Established under the auspices of a group of Moscow artists, art critics and art historians; the Institute provides professional postgraduate education for art practice and was the first in the Russian Federation. Since 2014 it is a two-year course. Educational course 'New art strategies', exhibition organisation, conference and symposiums organisation, summer schools, and publishing programme of the Institute were developed to integrate Russian art into the structures of international art world.

Fully supporting the aims and objectives of the Institute of Contemporary Art, the Open Culture Foundation offers four grants for the students of the Institute living outside Moscow. Thanks to this programme, talented artists from regions of Russia are able to get second professional education in contemporary art. The Open Culture Foundation intends to continue its grant programme to promote the education of students from the regions of Russia, enhancing permanent communication between the center and the regions.

The project, being developed for a number of years, had a certain impact in the arts. It is worth mentioning that most artists who made themselves known lately in the contemporary arts scene in Russia were ICA graduates, including: Vicktor Alimpiev, Alina Gutkina, Anya Zhelud, Arseny Zhilyaev, Elena Kovylina, Taus Makhacheva, Diana Machulina, Rostan Tavasiev, Anna Titova, Haim Sokol, Stanislav Shuripa, among many others.

The ICA graduates participate in international exhibitions:

Taus Makhacheva, Haim Sokol, Rostan Tavasiev, Vicktor Alimpiev, Irina Korina, Diana Machulina, Alina Gutkina participated in Moscow Biennale. Anna Titova took part in the main project of Venice Biennale 2011. The only Russian artist who took part in the main project dOCUMENTA 13 was Alexandra Sukhareva.

Apart from grant support, the Open Culture Foundation supports broadening activities of the ICA and its further development.

The priorities of the ICA includes rental of studios for students where the theory could be put into practice; permanent provision of educational needs with all necessary materials and educational space rental for the second year students. Furthermore, the ICA intends to develop partnerships with arts colleges in the west broadening the map of its partners. Currently, the ICA has partnership programmes with

Goldsmiths college, University of London and the University of Applied Arts Vienna.
